Summary:

This collection of SnowDATA products consists of grids (i.e. maps) in geotiff format. The grid resolution is 2-km x 2km, and the domain includes Alaska and adjacent Yukon, north of approximately 62° (see figure, right).

There are 21 downloadable data sets, each consisting of 34 files, one for each year, 1979-2012. Each set contains the results for a single model output variable. For variables in the form of a date (e.g., annual first snow date), results are expressed in both “day-of-year” (doy) and “day-of-simulation” (dos) forms – see product entry for details.

The core snow season is defined to be the longest period of continuous snow cover in each year (e.g., the blue shading in the figure at right).

The core snow season is applicable to the following products:

  • snow-up date: start of the core snow period
  • snow free date: end of the core snow period
  • snow days: number of days in core snow period
